The RomCom Guide to June

The World Cup is just around the corner, but we have other plans for the month. Plan out the rest of your June with this handy guide to the films on our radar.

18 June

Ocean’s 8
Starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchette, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson

What’s better than eleven men? One woman. But hey, we’ve got eight, so that’s gotta be pretty damn great. Spinning off from the 2001 franchise, Sandra Bullock leads the all-star cast of female thieves who plan to rob the Met Ball blind. If James Corden is the only thing that stands in their way, we’ve got a lot of confidence that they’ll pull it off.

The RomCom Guy Verdict
It’s not going to feature a lot of rom, but this crim-com looks to deliver in the same way that the previous films in the series did, if not more so.

22 June

Freak Show
Starring Alex Lawthler, Bette Middler, Abigail Breslin, AnnaSophia Robb

The last film Trudie Styler directed was a behind the scenes tell all documentary about the difficulties making The Emperor’s New Groove. The House of Mouse locked it in the vault faster than you can say “Is Goofy a dog?” But  she’s back with her first narrative feature. The End of the F***ing World’s Alex Lawthler stars as a boy at a conservative high school who runs for Homecoming Queen.

The RomCom Guy Verdict
For those who found Love, Simon to be too mainstream. There’s a fantastic cast on offer here with a timely premise, could be a real winner.

Starring Anna Farris, Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria

Overboard is an 80s classic whose premise has more than dated. Gender swapping it is really the only way to bring this tale into the modern world. After a bonk on the head, mean-spirited yacht owner Leonardo (Derbez) is struck with amnesia and is convinced by a mistreated employee (Farris) that he is actually her husband.

The RomCom Guy Verdict
An outdated premise that even the delightful Anna Farris will struggle to save. After the disastrous USA reviews, consider this one low on our priority list.

29 June

Starring Shailene Woodley, Sam Claflin

The Mercy but, you know, for kids! Stranded at sea stories seem to be a hot topic now, so why not take this true story and populate it with hot young things? Woodley and Claflin are the young couple whose lives and love is tested when their boat comes across a hurricane.

The RomCom Guy Verdict
We love a weepy, and lord knows we love Shailene Woodley, but something is holding us back on this one. It may be Sam Claflin… it’s probably Sam Claflin.

29 June

Starring Beattie Edmondson, Ed Skrein, Tom Bennett, Jennifer Saunders

Here at The RomCom Guy, we have a saying: All films could use more dogs. Patrick seems to have taken that saying to heart. Newcomer Beattie Edmondson plays second fiddle to the mischievous titular pug, while also making eyes at Deadpool villain turned vet Ed Skrein and the utterly charming Tom Bennett.

The RomCom Guy Verdict
This one seems to be aimed pretty young, but the trailer has a certain charm about it. Patrick’s got a while to go to convince us, but it may just end up being best in show!

The Bookshop
Starring Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Bill Nighy

Have you already had your fill of picturesque pediod films about the importance of the written word after The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? Well make room for more. The Bookshop sees Emily Mortimer’s bookshop owner go head to head with local busybody Patricia Clarkson, with Bill Nighy commenting wryly from the sidelines.

The RomCom Guy Verdict
This looks absolutely delightful, and the assembled cast of (usually supporting) actors are always very reliable. There is a chance the film could be overly twee, but our hopes are high.
